This extract is taken from a wonderful little novel which takes you back to a time in which the moon was still very close to the earth. As you might know the distance between the two is constantly increasing slowly but steadily. Some months ago, there moon hang red and full on the firmament and the night sky was even more beautiful than usual. Whether you are aware of it or not, the moon does have some influence on us, on our body fluids and our mood… especially if you’re a woman. So, I’ve always felt a deep melancholic longing when seeing the moon.

It is not per se positive or negative energy but only the result of how we use it. Therefore, it is important to be responsible.

According to a metaphorical story, Buddha was once asked how he managed to be so calm and happy. To which Buddha (Sanskrit “the enlightened”) answered: “First remove ‘I’, that is Ego, then remove want, that is Desire. See, now you are left with only happiness.”

समाधि (samadhi) | Higher Self, acrylic on canvas, 30 x 100 cm, 2018.

Samadhi is a Sanskrit word which cannot be directly translated into any other language. However, it can be described as “concentration” or “unification of the mind”, a meditative state in which one is completely aware of the present moment but is not focused on anything. The mind is still. In the Buddhist tradition it is the ultimate stage of the Noble Eightfold Path.

For as long as I am practicing meditation, I’ve occasionally had brief glimpses of what could be something in the direction of samadhi. The term is so powerful though that I cannot claim to have ever experienced it. When love or pain become too much, the body automatically brings us in connection to ourselves and forces us to face it unprotected. It is not by chance that “the phoenix must burn to emerge”. Usually, this happens very rarely, but when it does, it is when later we say, “It changed me”, “I learnt something from it”, “I cannot put it into words”. Call it true/higher self, universal energy, God, zen-mind… whatever name you give that which lies beyond your physical body and your ego, once you connect to it, it is as if you’ve reached the eye of the hurricane. While the crazy whirl around you is doing on, you’re there in the midst of it all, calm and safe in stillness, letting it happen.

As the world dreams, emotions reveal themselves more intensely than during the day. Inspired by the German poet Joseph von Eichendorff's work "Mondnacht" [lunar night], the painting shows buildings of different parts of the earth, which are peacefully unified under the starry firmament. It is a depiction of the spiritual connection between human and all beings and the universe.

It seems that juxtapositions define our life and our society. Trying to remain individuality and singularity in the anonymity and loneliness of the crowd is only one example.of the daily struggles one has to face. Is it possible to escape the stream of the modern world or is it a must to go with the flow?

The quote is taken from Eddie Vedder's song "Society" and should be familiar to the ones who've watched the movie "Into the Wild" (2007).

The Native Americans of the Cherokee tribe believe that inside every person there is a fight between a white and a black wolf. One represents all positive and the other all evil in life.  The winner is the one who's being fed. Yet, it is important to appreciate both of them, for if both are fed, both are satisfied and win. "How you choose to interact with the opposing forces within you will determine your life. Starve one or the other or guide them both."
